I was invited for two years running to deliver two week long projects at The Tokyo College of Music and Kobe College . The aim was to prepare the students and teachers at the colleges for leading community music projects. The work included teaching them how to be more creative with their musical skill, how to feel comfortable improvising, being spontaneous and having the confidence to nurture a creative environment in which they are more able to facilitate people’s self exploration. After the week of training their learning was put into practise leading a workshop with a group of musically gifted children. This work had a profound effect on the students, some of whom felt they had never before been invited to really “let go” and express themselves.
